SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Visio 2000 on a Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 Terminal Server computer from a client, the installation process may be extremely slow. Each component may take several minutes to install rather than seconds. The Installation Wizard may also appear to stop responding (hang).

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, perform the installation on the Terminal Server computer directly. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Log on to the server as Administrator, or as a user with full administrative privileges.
  2. Verify that there is no virus-scan software running.
  3. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  4. Double-click Add/Remove Programs.
  5. On the Install/Uninstall tab, click Install.
  6. Browse to the Install folder for Visio 2000.

    The location will be CD-ROM drive\Install.
  7. Double-click Setup.exe to begin the installation process, and then follow the instructions on your screen.
  8. When the installation is finished, follow these steps to add the following key and value to the registry:WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.
    1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).
    2. Locate the following key in the registry:

      HKEY_LOCAL_Machine\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Terminal Server\Install\Software\Visio\Visio 2000\Application\

    3. On the Edit menu, click Add Value, and then add the following registry value:

      Value Name: Featuremgmt
      Data Type: REG_SZ
      Value: 0

    4. Quit Registry Editor.
