Visio2000: MSIexec Errors Occur During Installation (269459)

SYMPTOMS

When you are installing Visio 2000, you may receive one of the following error messages:
Msiexec. This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If this problem persists, contact the program vendor.

-or-

Cannot find the MSIexec.exe or one of its components.

CAUSE

Visio 2000 uses a new Windows Installer Setup program called MSI. If MSI is not installed correctly, you may receive error messages when you try to install Visio 2000.

You may also receive error messages when you try to install Visio 2000 on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT if your access permissions are different from the access permissions the MSI service was given.

RESOLUTION

To address these problems, reinstall MSI.

To reinstall MSI:
  1. Insert the Visio 2000 CD into the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.
  2. On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows 95 or Microsoft Windows 98, open the \Install\Bin\Sp\MSI\Win9x folder on the Visio CD.

    On a computer that is running Microsoft Windows NT or Microsoft Windows 2000, open the \Install\Bin\Sp\MSI\WinNT folder on the Visio CD.
  3. Double-click InstMsi.
