Cannot Add Windows 2000 Computer to Domain: The Network Path Was Not Found (269264)

SYMPTOMS

You are unable to add your Windows 2000 Professional or Windows 2000 Server computer to an Active Directory domain. When you specify the domain to join, you receive the following error message:

The following error occurred when attempting to join "domain name". The network path was not found

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you are using an incorrect Internet Protocol (IP) address for the Domain Name Service (DNS) server.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, use the correct DNS server IP address and then join the domain.

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, point to Network and Dialup Connections, and then click Local Area Connection.
  2. Click Properties.
  3. Click Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), and then click Properties.
  4. Click Advanced, and then click DNS.
  5. Select the incorrect DNS IP address, and click Edit.
  6. Type the correct IP address for the DNS server, and then click OK.
  7. Click OK on the open dialog boxes to close them, and then click Close.
