SYMPTOMS After you download Microsoft Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1
(WMP7 or WMP7.1) from the Internet, when you attempt to install WMP7 OR WMP7.1,
you receive the following error message: Windows Media
Configuration Manager Windows Media Setup requires Internet Explorer 4.0
or greater and DCOM95 to be installed. Setup cannot continue.
CAUSE WMP7 Setup checks the registry key for the specific version
of DCOM 4,71,0,1718. If the version number listed is less than 1718, Setup
generates the error message. Any number of applications that install DCOM can
change this value that generates the error message. RESOLUTION To resolve this issue, download and install the latest
version of Windows Media Player from the following Microsoft Web site: For additional information on this issue, please see the

WORKAROUND To work around this issue, do one of the following: Verify and Change the Registry Value for DCOMWARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious
problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft
cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry
Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own
risk. IMPORTANT: Backup the registry using Scanregw.

Change the Default string value in the registry key
for DCOM using the Registry Editor. To change the value, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
- Open the following registry key:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{bdc67890-4fc0-11d0-a805-00aa006d2ea4}\InstalledVersion NOTE: If DCOM95 is installed, the value of the key should read 4,71,0,1718 or greater. If the value of the key is less than 1718, WMP7 Setup
generates the error message. - If the value of the key is less than 1718, change the
version number to 4'71'0'1719.
- Close the Registry Editor, and then run WMP7.exe to install
WMP7.
Download and Install DCOM98 for Windows 98 To download DCOM98 for Windows 98, go to the following Microsoft
Web site and follow the instructions: After you have downloaded DCOM98.exe, run it to install DCOM98
for Windows 98.
