"Drive W:" Replaces Control Panel and Printers Icons and Names (269182)

SYMPTOMS

The icons for the Control Panel and Printers folders may change to a Microsoft WordPad icon, and their names may change to "Drive W:". Also, when you double-click either of these icons, you may receive the following error message:
W:\ is not accessible.

This folder was moved or removed.

CAUSE

This problem can occur after you start a Microsoft Office program such as Microsoft Word 2000 by clicking Start, pointing to Programs, and then clicking the program while Windows Explorer is running. This problem may also occur after emptying the Recycle Bin in an Explorer window by right-clicking the Recycle Bin and selecting the Empty Recycle Bin option.

RESOLUTION

To work around this problem, use either of the following methods:
  • In Windows Explorer, click Refresh on the View menu.
  • Start the Office program by using a shortcut that is not on the Start menu.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
