Beginning with version 7 of the Windows Media Encoder, you can control what content is archived through the archive control buttons.

When you initially set up an encoding session that is archiving to a file, you are prompted for the path and file name. If this file already exists when you start the encoder, the following error message appears:
Output file exists. Overwrite? Yes / No
If you click Yes, the program will overwrite the existing file. Otherwise, the encoder process does not begin. If the file does not exist, the Encoder will create it.

While the encoding process is running, the archive controls are available for you to use to determine what content is recorded and what content is not.
  • During the encoding, if the pause button is clicked, the archive stops recording until pause is cleared. The writer then picks up in the same file where it left off.
  • During the encoding, if the stop archive button is clicked, the writer closes the file. If at a later time the start archive button is clicked, the Encoder will not overwrite the original file, but rather it will append "-<number>" to the end of the file name.
