MAPI Profiles Are Deleted and Error Message Occurs When SBS Console Is Reinstalled (268996)

SUMMARY

When you reinstall the Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 console using the sbssetup.exe/reinstall command, all Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI) profiles on SBS are deleted. When you start the Microsoft Fax Service, you may receive the following error message:
The Windows NT Fax Service could not log on to your MAPI Profile (Administrator) and will not be able to deliver faxes to this profile.

To create a new MAPI profile, follow these steps:

  1. Create a temporary directory, and then copy these files:

    • For Small Business Server v4.5:

    • \ClientApps\MS\Office\CD1\PFiles\Common\System\Mapi\1033\NT\Newprof.exe
    • \ClientApps\MS\Office\CD1\PFiles\Common\System\Mapi\1033\Mapisvc.inf
    • \Smallbusiness\Sbssvr.prf
      For Small Business Server 2000:

    • \ClntApps\ClientApps5\Outlook2000SR1\PFiles\Common\System\Mapi\1033\NT\newprof.exe
    • \ClntApps\ClientApps5\Outlook2000SR1\PFiles\Common\System\Mapi\1033\mapisvc.inf
    • \Program Files\Microsoft BackOffice\ClientSetup\Clients\Setup\sbs.prf
  2. At a command prompt, navigate to the temporary directory that you created in step one, and then run the following command:

    For Small Business Server v4.5:

    newprof -p .\sbssvr.prf

    For Small Business Server 2000:

    newprof -p .\sbs.prf

    Using regedit go to the following key

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem\Profiles\Microsoft Outlook\13dbb0c8aa05101a9bb000aa002fc45a

    Double click on the the value 001e6608 and change %SBSServer% to your SBS server's netbios name.
  3. To verify that the profile was created, stop and restart the Microsoft Fax Service (located in the Services tool in Control Panel).
NOTE: Newprof.exe and Mapisvc.inf can also be obtained from the Microsoft Outlook 2000 CD-ROM or from the first CD-ROM of Microsoft Office 2000. The temporary directory and its contents may be safely deleted after the procedure is complete.

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.


If a corrupt file exists, you may not be able to create a new MAPI profile. If you complete the preceding steps, and a new MAPI profile is not created, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, and then type Regedt32.
  2. Locate and click the following key:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\WindowsNT\CurrentVersion\Windows Messaging Subsystem Subsystem\Profiles

  3. If you see an Administrator key below the Profiles key, click Administrator, and then press DELETE to remove the profile.
  4. Rerun the newprof -p .\sbssvr.prf command to create the profile.
