Event ID 9022 Messages Occur When Using the POP3 Connector with SBS 4.5 (268990)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5
This article was previously published under Q268990 SYMPTOMS
If your computer is running BackOffice Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5, and you install the Microsoft Exchange Connector for Post Office Protocol version 3 (POP3) Mailboxes, the following event may be reported in the application event log of Event Viewer:
Event ID: 9022
Source: POP3 Connector
Description: Failed to connect to the LDAP directory on host SBSSERVER.
CAUSE
This message can occur when either the Microsoft Exchange Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) service has been disabled or the port number of the LDAP server has been changed. The POP3 Connector does not support LDAP queries on ports other than port 389.
The POP3 Connector queries LDAP after downloading messages from the POP3 server to obtain the rfc822 attribute of a user's e-mail address. This attribute is then used to obtain the X.500 distinguished name of the mailbox. This information is used internally by the POP3 Connector. If the LDAP service is not enabled, the POP3 Connector continues to deliver mail to the Internet Mail Service as expected, although the events that are listed in the "Summary" section continue to be logged in Event Viewer.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, reconfigure the LDAP service to work with the POP3 Connector. To do this, follow these steps:
- Start the Exchange Administrator program and expand the tree in the left pane until you locate the Protocols container underneath your Site object.
- Click the Protocols container, and then double-click the LDAP object on the right side to display its properties.
- In the Port Number box, type 389.
- Click to select the Enable protocol check box.
- Click OK to save the settings.
- Click the Protocols container under your server object in the tree in the left pane of the Exchange Administrator program.
- Double-click the LDAP object on the right pane to display its properties.
- In the Port Number box, type 389.
- Click to select the Use site defaults for all properties check box. Click OK to save the settings.
MORE INFORMATION
In some instances, for example, when another service on the same computer also requires that the LDAP server listens on port 389, you may have to disable LDAP in the Exchange Administrator program. When you disable the protocol, the POP3 Connector does not lose any functionality. In this case, the application event log messages may be safely disregarded. If you disable LDAP in the Exchange Administrator program, you should increase the Maximum Log Size setting of the application event log in Event Viewer to at least 2048 kilobytes (KB) to avoid receiving error messages when Event Viewer becomes full. You can also enable the Overwrite events as needed option to stop receiving messages.
