FIX: Transactional messages are not accepted on remote computer (268812)

SYMPTOMS

When you send transactional messages to a remote computer, the messages may not be accepted by the remote computer. If you restart the Message Queuing service on the remote computer, the computer accepts messages again; however, after a period of time, it will stop again. This cycle may repeat indefinitely. The number of messages delivered each time may vary.

CAUSE

Microsoft Windows 2000 Service Pack 1(SP1) and Microsoft Windows NT Server version 4.0 Service Pack 4 (SP4) added a light weight duplicate message detection mechanism for Express and Recoverable messages. This duplicate removal code does not ignore transactional messages, which prevents the Exactly Once Delivery code for transactional messages from working properly. RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows NT Server 4.0 service pack that contains this hotfix.

MORE INFORMATION

In Windows 2000, this problem was fixed in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2 (SP2). This fix adds a check to ensure that transactional messages are not examined by the Express or Recoverable message duplicate detection code. This reinstates the use of the EOD logic only.
