Cannot import the Drmapclt.reg file while installing Drive Share utility for Terminal Server Client 4.0 (268774)

SYMPTOMS

When you install the Drive Share tool included in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Server Resource Kit on Terminal Server Client 4.0, you may receive the following error message:
Registry Editor cannot import drive:\path\drmapclt.reg: The specified file is not a registry script.
NOTE: This behavior may be experienced on Microsoft Win16 Terminal Server Client or Microsoft Win32a Terminal Server Client.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur because programs earlier than Windows 2000 use a different header for the Windows Registry Editor on Terminal Server Client. In addition, limited functionality exists between Unicode 1.x and 2.0.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To work around this issue, follow these steps:
  • Manually edit the registry. For additional information about editing the registry, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • Manually edit the Drmapclt.reg file using the following steps:
    1. Open the Drmapclt.reg file using the Notepad.exe file, and then change the header from Windows Registry Editor Version 5.0 to REGEDIT4.
    2. On the File menu, click Save as, and then in the File name box type drmapclt.reg.Note:

      • If you are using Microsoft Windows NT, clear the Save as Unicode check box.
      • If you are using Windows 2000, change Encoding to ANSI. You then receive the message "drive:\path\drmapclt.reg already exists. Do you wish to replace it?" Click Yes.
    3. Exit Notepad.exe.
    4. Install the Drive Share utility from Tools Help included with the Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this behavior to be an issue with the Drive Share utility included in the Microsoft Windows 2000 Resource Kit.

MORE INFORMATION

When you install the Drive Share utility on Terminal Server Client, the following must be true:
  • Terminal Server is installed on Windows 2000 Server.
  • Terminal Server Client for Windows 2000 is installed on either Windows 2000 Professional or Windows NT.
The Drive Share utility will not work with Terminal Server Client that is included with Windows NT 4.0, Terminal Server Edition. When Windows 2000 Terminal Server Client is installed it adds a dependency used by Remote Display Protocol 5.0 to perform client device redirection.
