The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft BackOffice Small Business Server 4.5

This article was previously published under Q268570

SYMPTOMS

When you click Finish to complete the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW) after you chose the Select an ISP for a new Internet account option, you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
  • Automatic signup failed and got the following error message. Internet Connection Wizard: Your SBS cannot process your Internet Service Information. Contact your Internet service provider for help.
  • A phone book entry could not be found. Either the file is missing, or the disk is full.
  • The service provider file is missing information required to continue setting up your Internet connection.
  • The Internet Connection Wizard could not configure your computer to connect to the Internet. You may not have the permissions to alter settings.

You must manually set up your TCP/IP Protocols, Dial-up Networking, and modem, ISDN line, or other dial-out device.

CAUSE

This issue can occur after you install a version of Internet Explorer that is later than version 5.0 on the Small Business Server-based computer. After you install a later version, files that relate to the Referral Server portion of the ICW are updated, and this causes the Referral Server portion of the ICW to no longer function properly. After you use the Select an ISP for a new Internet account option, the ICW tries to connect to a referral server, and generates the error messages that are listed earlier in this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Microsoft no longer maintains or supports an Internet service provider (ISP) referral server for Small Business Server (SBS). Although it is possible to restore the ICW to full functionality by uninstalling later versions of Internet Explorer and then reinstalling Internet Explorer version 5.0, this is not recommended or supported. As of 8/9/2000, all queries to the ISP referral server generate the following error message:
No service is available in your area.
The Referral Server portion of the ICW is no longer supported. For additional information about the SBS signup server, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
