This article was previously published under Q268460

SUMMARY

Entourage does not have a method to automatically archive messages. This article describes how to manually archive older items. The procedure in this article applies only to e-mail messages.

MORE INFORMATION

To manually archive messages, you can use the drag-and-drop feature in Entourage. This method works for either a single message or a folder that contains many messages.

To manually archive messages:
  1. Minimize the Entourage window by clicking the resize tab at the bottom left of the window so that your Macintosh desktop or other folder is visible.
  2. Click the folder or item that you want to archive, and then drag the item to the location in which you want to store the archive.
  3. Release the mouse button. A file is created with the name of the original item or folder.
To restore an archive to the Entourage folder view:
  1. Locate the Entourage archive file on your desktop or in the folder where you stored it.
  2. Double-click the archive file, and then click Import when you receive the following message:

Do you want to import the messages in this file into a new folder?

Messages that you import by following the steps in this article are placed in a folder that has the same name as the original file. If a folder exists with the same name as the archive, a folder is created with the number "1" (without quotation marks) appended to the end of the folder name.

NOTE: If you have messages that you archived from an Internet Messaging Access Protocol (IMAP) server folder and later choose to import these messages, the folder is created in the local message store instead of in the IMAP server folder structure. You can move these messages to the IMAP server by using the drag-and-drop feature.
