"NLB Failed to Start" Error Message on Windows 2000 If NLB Is Not Installed (268437)

SYMPTOMS

The following error message may be placed in the system log during the startup process:
Event ID: 7000

Event Source: Service Control Manager

Description: The Network Load Balancing service failed to start due to the following error:

The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

Network Load Balancing is not installed on the system.

CAUSE

Although Network Load Balancing (NLB) is not currently installed, some NLB registry keys may be present in the registry.

RESOLUTION

Warning If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To prevent these error messages from occurring, remove the following registry subkeys (if they exist) after you back up the registry:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog\System\WLBS

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WLBS

STATUS
