WD2001: JPEG Images Printed with Word 6.0 and Word 95 Compatibility Options Appear Blurry (268428)

When you use the Microsoft Word 6.0 and Word 95 compatibility options to print documents that contain JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) images, the printed images may appear blurry.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the document contains JPEG images, and if the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box is selected on the Compatibility Options tab under the Preferences setting.
WORKAROUND
To work around this issue, click to clear the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box. To do so, follow these steps:
- Open the Word document that exhibits the behavior.
- On the Tools menu, click Preferences, and then click the Compatibility tab.
- In the Options box, locate the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box. If the check box is selected, click to clear it.
NOTE: The Default button on the Compatibility tab saves the compatibility options that you select as the new default settings in the active template. Word displays every new document based on the active template with the new compatibility options that you select.

If the Use printer metrics to lay out document check box is selected, Word uses the information from the printer driver that is installed, as in some earlier versions of Word.
If this check box is cleared (default), Word uses built-in metrics to lay out the document. This means that your printed document looks the same no matter what printer driver is installed.
