The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Excel 2001 for Mac

This article was previously published under Q268412

SYMPTOMS

When conditional formatting is applied to a cell in Microsoft Excel, and the cell is cut and pasted to another location, undoing the paste may not correctly update the conditional formatting information.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if both of the following conditions are true:
  1. The conditional formatting in the cell is based on the value of another cell.

    -and-
  2. The destination of the paste operation is the cell on which the conditional formatting is based.
When the cut cell is pasted into the cell on which its conditional formatting is based, the conditional formatting changes. This change is not reversed when the paste operation is undone.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, verify the conditional formatting criteria after undoing a paste, and restore cell references as necessary.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
