WD2000: Clicking "Look Up Reference" or "Define" Connects to Internet, or Nothing Happens (268383)

SYMPTOMS

When you click Look Up Reference on the Tools menu, or click Define on the Standard toolbar or on the shortcut menu when you right-click a selected word, one of the following events occurs:

If you have an Internet connection, you are directed to the Microsoft Encarta Online Reference Web site.

-or-
If you do not have an Internet connection, nothing happens.

NOTE: Microsoft World English Dictionary still provides access to the CD-ROM-based content information and does not require access to the Internet. To access the locally installed World English Dictionary content, click the Encarta Quickbooks icon in the system tray. The Quickbooks icon provides access to QuickDefine, QuickQuote, QuickSynonym, and Find in all books.

CAUSE

This functionality is a design change of these added features. All Microsoft Encarta 2001 products now add these features to Microsoft Word and direct you to the Microsoft Encarta Online Reference Web site, instead of retrieving the requested information directly from the Encarta CD-ROM.

WORKAROUND

To work around this default behavior and retrieve the information directly from your CD-ROM, double-click the Maxon.reg file found in the Support folder on Disk 1 of the Encarta 2001 product that you are using.

NOTE: The Maxon.reg file assumes the World English Dictionary was installed to the default location.

In earlier versions of some Microsoft Encarta products (for example, Microsoft Encarta World English Dictionary or Microsoft Bookshelf), the following functionality was added to Microsoft Word:

Look Up Reference was added to the Tools menu.

-and-
A Define button was added to the Standard toolbar.

-and-
Define was added to the shortcut menu that appears when you right-click a selected word.

When you click Look Up Reference on the Tools menu, or Define on the Standard toolbar or on the shortcut menu that appears when you right-click a selected word in these earlier versions, the requested information is retrieved from the Microsoft Encarta or Microsoft Bookshelf CD-ROM.

However, beginning with Microsoft Encarta 2001, reference inquiries from Microsoft Office are directed to the Internet instead of to the local CD-ROM-based programs. You must have an Internet connection to retrieve the requested information.
