Intel Pentium 4 CPU Not Identified Correctly by Windows Me Direct3D (268356)

SYMPTOMS

Direct3D performance may not be as fast as you expect when you run Windows Millennium Edition (Me) on a computer with an Intel Pentium 4 central processing unit (CPU).

CAUSE

The version of Direct3D that is included with Windows Me does not properly identify Intel Pentium 4 processors, and does not fully implement the performance optimizations that are available only on Pentium 4 processors.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

The Intel Pentium 4 processor is also referred to by its code name "Willamette." It is the next generation (P7 family) of 32-bit Intel Architecture (IA-32) processor; it succeeds the P6 family of Pentium Pro, Pentium II, and Pentium III processors.
