Windows Millennium Edition Does Not Support Display Sizes That Are Not Multiples of 8 (268348)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q268348

SYMPTOMS

Display sizes that are not multiples of 8 are not supported by Windows Millennium Edition (Me).

CAUSE

Windows performs an integer division and multiplication of the display size by 8 in its code, which causes the remainder lines to be unused.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows Me only supports display sizes that are multiples of 8. If the size is not a multiple of 8, the remainder of the display is ignored. For example, if the display size is 1400 x 1050, Windows Me only uses the 1400 x 1048 portion of the display. The last two lines are unused. There is no loss of drawing objects on the display, and the display size of 1400 x 1048 is reported to the Display tool in Control Panel.
