WMP7: Winamp Re-assumes File Associations After Windows Media Player 7 Has Been Installed (268274)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 7
- Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1
This article was previously published under Q268274 SYMPTOMS
After you install Microsoft Windows Media Player version 7.0 with the default file associations, and you access a media file directly from Windows Explorer, Winamp media player may open.
CAUSE
By default during Winamp installation, the Maintain File Associations check box is selected. This setting causes Winamp to reassociate itself with certain file types when it is opened, causing this type of behavior.
RESOLUTION
When you install Winamp after installing Windows Media Player, clear the Maintain File Associations check box during Winamp Setup.
If Winamp is already installed, follow these steps: - Start Winamp.
- Press Ctrl+P to open the Preferences window.
- Under Setup, click Agent and clear the Maintain File Associations check box.
- Start Windows Media Player. On Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Format tab.
- Individually select the files you want to reassociate with Windows Media Player, or click Select All to use Windows Media Player to play all formats.
To check the file associations, double-click a .cda file in Windows Explorer. If Windows Media Player opens the file, you have correctly configured Windows Media Player.
