Works 6: Dragging Windows Metafile from Word Processor to Portfolio Causes Black or Discolored Image (268224)

SYMPTOMS

When you create a Microsoft Works Word Processor document, insert a Microsoft Windows Metafile (*.wmf) image into the document, and then drag the image into Works Portfolio, the image may turn black or become discolored and unusable.

If you drag the image from Works Portfolio back to Works Word Processor, the image remains black or discolored.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your system is set to 256 colors. Works Portfolio changes .wmf files into Device Independent Bitmap (.dib) files, and this change can corrupt the color formatting process.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Paste Special

  1. In the Works Word Processor document, select the image that you want.
  2. On the Edit menu, click Copy.
  3. Right-click the image in the Word Processor document.
  4. On the shortcut menu, click Clear.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special.
  6. Under As, click Picture, and then click OK.

    NOTE: You may have to move the image back to its original place.
  7. Start Works Portfolio.
  8. Drag the new image into Works Portfolio.

Method 2: Change System Color-Resolution Setting

  1. Click Start on the Windows taskbar.
  2. Point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  3. Double-click the Display icon.
  4. Click the Settings tab.
  5. Under Colors, select High Color(16 bit) or greater.
  6. Click OK to apply the new setting.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in Works 6.
