Works 6: Spreadsheet Stops Responding When You Format a Chart (268194)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Works 6
- Microsoft Works Suite 2001
This article was previously published under Q268194 SYMPTOMS
When you attempt to format a bar chart, you may receive the following (or a similar) error message:
Wksss has caused an error in WKSSS.EXE.
Wksss will now close.
If you continue to experience problems,
try restarting your computer.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur when you create a bar chart that contains two or more series of data, you delete one or more of the data series (but not the last series), and you then attempt to reformat the chart, as in the following example:
- Start Microsoft Works Spreadsheet.
- Enter the following in a worksheet:
A1: 1 B1:2 C1:3
A2: 4 B2:5 C2:6
- Select cells A1 through C2.
- On the Standard toolbar, click New Chart.
- Accept the default, and then click OK.
- On the Edit menu, click Series.
- Delete the series in the 1st box (backspace), and then click OK.
- On the Format menu, click Chart Type.
RESOLUTION
To work around this issue, make sure that in the Series dialog box (click Series on the Edit menu while viewing the chart) there are no blank boxes between the first series and the last series. If a blank box does exist, type the data you want to fill the blank box and then delete the redundant series, as in the following example:
- Start Works Spreadsheet.
- Create the following worksheet:
A1: 1 B1:2 C1:3
A2: 4 B2:5 C2:6
- Select cells A1 through C2.
- On the Standard toolbar, click New Chart.
- Click OK.
- On the Edit menu, click Series.
- Delete the series in the 1st box (backspace).
- In the 1st box, type A2:C2
- Delete the series in the 2nd box (backspace), and then click OK.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
