The accDoDefaultAction is blocked in Outlook 98 and in Outlook 2000 by the SR-1 E-mail security update (268176)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 98
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000, Service Release 1 (SR-1)
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002

This article was previously published under Q268176

SYMPTOMS

An assistive aid that uses the accDoDefaultAction method of Microsoft Active Accessibility to send e-mail through Microsoft Outlook 98 or Outlook 2000 may find that the action is blocked.

CAUSE

When E-mail Security Update for either Outlook 98 or Outlook 2000 SR1 is installed, assistive aids such as voice input utilities, onscreen keyboards, and switch devices cannot act on programmatic objects by using Active Accessibility. Examples of programmatic objects are buttons and menu items. The blocked accDoDefaultAction behavior can be demonstrated by using the Object Inspector tool in the Active Accessibility Software Development Kit (SDK).

RESOLUTION

Disabling features of the patch is possible at the administrative level if Outlook is running in an Exchange Server environment and mail is not delivered to a personal folders (.pst) file. For more information on configuring the patch's functionality through Exchange Server, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

To ensure consistent behavior in all environments, it is recommended that aids map commands for sending mail to keyboard sequences.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a bug in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

The Outlook 98 or 2000 E-mail Security Update does not allow mail to be sent without your permission, and it protects you from accidentally opening attached files that may pose a security risk to your computer. This update limits certain functionality in Outlook in order to provide a higher level of security.

The Outlook 98 or 2000 security patch blocks the accDoDefaultAction method when it is used in the following situations:
  • A MAPI-enabled application performs a MAPISendDocuments command, usually in response to selecting a Send or Send to menu option. If Outlook is the default MAPI client, its user interface (UI) is displayed. Activating the Send button in this interface by using accDoDefaultAction does not work.
  • A user attempts to use the Send command in the File menu of Outlook's New Message window by using accDoDefaultAction.
Although the accDoDefaultAction method is blocked, the aid can map the following key combinations to serve as alternatives:
  • In the UI that is displayed by a MAPISend command, press ALT+S or CTRL+ENTER.
  • In the New Message window, press ALT+F and then press E.Note This sequence works with the English language Outlook UI.
