WD97: "There Was an Unexpected Error ..." or Word Closes While Checking German Grammar (268072)

SYMPTOMS

When you are working in German text with background grammar checking turned on, Word 97 closes suddenly.

When you are working in German text with background grammar checking turned off, you receive the following error message when you start the spelling and grammar checker:
There was an unexpected error in the grammar checker. Word cannot complete the grammar check.

CAUSE

Either of these problems may occur when all of the following conditions are true:
  • The text includes a word that contains at least 29 characters.
  • The word that contains at least 29 characters is preceded by the article "ein".
  • The last component of this word is a verb.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

Steps to Reproduce the Problem

  1. In German Word 97 or English Word 97 with German Proofing Tools installed, create a new document.
  2. Make sure the language of the document is set to German.
  3. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Spelling & Grammar tab.
  4. Click to select Check spelling as you type and Check grammar as you type, and then click OK.
  5. Type the following text and then press ENTER:

    ein Gesamtvollstreckungsverfahren

    Result: Word closes immediately without an error message.
