OL: S/MIME Clear Text Signed Messages Are Invalidated When They Are Created by a Client Extension (268069)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Outlook 2002
- Microsoft Outlook 2000
- Microsoft Outlook 98
This article was previously published under Q268069 SYMPTOMS If a Microsoft Outlook client extension creates a S/MIME
message with a multipart or mixed body and sends the message as a clear text
signed message (attaching the signature as a Smime.p7s file), the message
appears as a "tampered" message by the receiver. CAUSE This problem occurs because the Internet Mail Transport (in
both the Corporate Workgroup (CW) mode and the Internet Mail Only (IMO) mode)
reparses and rewrites the body of the message even if it is valid.
RESOLUTION This behavior is by design. STATUSMicrosoft
has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed
at the beginning of this article.
