Windows 2000 Telnet Server Stops Responding After Binary Input (267843)

SYMPTOMS

When a Windows 2000-based computer that is running the Telnet Server service receives a malformed stream of binary zeros as input from a Telnet client, the Telnet Server service may stop responding (hang).

RESOLUTION

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article. This problem was first corrected in Windows 2000 Service Pack 2.

MORE INFORMATION

When the Telnet Server service hangs, any existing Telnet client sessions are disconnected, with the loss of any work that was in progress at the time. However, this does not affect any other services on the host computer, and cannot affect Windows 2000 itself. You can restore operations by restarting the Telnet Server service.
