SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to drag and drop an image file to another folder, you may receive the following error message
Cannot move Filename: Access is denied. The source file may be in use.
where Filename is the name of the image file.

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if you attempt to move an image file in the My Pictures folder to another folder in the My Pictures folder and you have enabled the Thumbnails view.

Note: This behavior can also occur for any folder that you customize with the Image Preview template.

RESOLUTION

To work around this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Right-click the image file, drag and drop the file to the folder, and then select Move Here.
  • Right-click the image file, click Cut, right-click the folder, and then click Paste.
  • On the View menu, click a view option other than Thumbnails, and then move the file.
