SFP Does Not Protect Files That Are Located in the \Vmm32 Directory (267689)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q267689

SYMPTOMS

System File Protection (SFP) in Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) does not protect all files located in the %Windir%\System\Vmm32 directory from being copied, deleted or renamed.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.

MORE INFORMATION

SFP does not protect against copying, deleting or renaming files in the %Windir%\System\Vmm32 directory because application installations are not required to place files in that directory. SFP prevents you from accidentally deleting and overwriting specific core Windows Me files, but it does not protect all files on your computer.

For a complete listing of the locations and files protected by SFP, use a standard text editor such as Microsoft Windows Notepad to view the Sfpdb.sfb file located in the %Windir%\System\Sfp directory.
