SYMPTOMS

After running the Home Networking Wizard on a Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) computer, and creating a client disk for a computer running Microsoft Windows 98, or Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition (SE), the client disk causes Windows 98 to stop responding while in the Share My Documents section of the Home Networking Wizard. This occurs after the wizard requests the Windows 98 installation media. The dialog box remains on the screen, and you can only close it by pressing CTRL+ALT+DEL. At this point, you cannot complete the wizard.

CAUSE

This only happens on Windows 98 when you do not have the installation media. This does not happen in Windows Millennium Edition because the .cab files are copied to the hard disk. When you insert the Windows 98 CD-ROM, it blocks all autoplay events until all applications have been processed. Because the Home Networking Wizard is blocked, the two applications are unable to do anything.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, install File and Print Sharing on a Windows 98, or Windows 98 SE computer before you run the Home Networking Wizard from the Windows Me Setup disk.

To Install File and Printer Sharing, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double-click the Network icon.
  3. Click File and Print Sharing on the Configuration Tab.
  4. Click to select both check boxes, and then click OK.
  5. Click OK again.
  6. Insert the Windows media when you are prompted to do so.
  7. Restart the computer.
After you install File and Print Sharing, you can run Setup.exe by clicking Run on the Start menu, typing A:\Setup.exe, and then clicking OK. Or, you can also go to the A: drive in Windows Explorer, and then double-click setup.exe to run Setup.
