Cannot Enter Standby or Hibernate While the Windows Media Player Is Open (267642)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q267642

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to place your Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me)-based computer in a low-power state (Hibernate or Standby), your computer "attempts" to enter the low-power state, but then you may receive the following message:
You cannot enter Hibernate mode or Standby mode because a network resource is in use.
This behavior can occur if you attempt to suspend the computer through the Shut Down menu by pressing the power button (on computers with push-button suspend options) or by using a timed suspend mode in the Power Option Properties dialog box.

When you attempt to connect remotely, you may receive a "Dial Up Networking" information box that contains the following error message:
There is an active dial up network connection. Suspending your machine will close the connection. Do you want to continue? YES or NO

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your Internet connection or another network connection is active, and a song in the Windows Media Player media library or a song from the play list is stopped or interrupted during playback, or if Media Player has an association to that file.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, quit the Windows Media player before you attempt to use the Hibernate or Standby modes.
