Virtual Private Network Connection Remains As the Default Connection (267602)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition
This article was previously published under Q267602 SYMPTOMS
If you use a Local Area Network (LAN) for your Internet connection, the Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection may be dialed as a default connection even after you clear the This is the default Internet connection check box.
CAUSE
When a VPN is selected as the default connection, and is set to always dial from a computer that uses a LAN as its Internet connection, the VPN automatically keeps the setting, provided that no other dial-up adapter is listed in Dial-up Networking. When you clear the This is the default Internet connection check box, the VPN continues to be the default connection.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
- On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Dial-Up Networking.
- Right-click Virtual Private Network, click Properties, and then click the Dialing tab.
- Click to select the This is the default Internet connection check box.
- Select Never dial a connection, and then click OK.
- Right-click Virtual Private Network, click Properties, click to clear the This is the default Internet connection check box, and then click OK.
If you are using an additional connection to the Internet, such as a modem, you can reset the default by selecting the appropriate connection in Internet Properties.
