Internet Connection Wizard Does Not Set Internet Properties Correctly (267471)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q267471

SYMPTOMS

When you click the Microsoft Internet Explorer icon to connect to the Internet, Internet Explorer may open immediately followed by the Dial-up Networking (DUN) connection although you have a cable or DSL connection, which does not use a DUN connection.

CAUSE

After you run the Internet Connection Wizard (ICW), and set up Internet Explorer to connect by using a local area network (LAN), the Internet Explorer connection may be set to Always dial my default connection.

If you have a cable or DSL connection (connecting through a LAN), and then you create a dial-up connection after the system is set up, you may find that Internet Explorer has set the connection to Always dial my default connection, even if the dial-up connection may not be used for Internet access.

This behavior may also occur if you use the Internet Connection Wizard, and select to connect by using a LAN for cable or DSL connections.

WORKAROUND

To change the setting to Never dial a connection for LAN, DSL, and cable connections, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
  2. Double click Internet Properties, and then click the Connections tab.
  3. Select the option Never dial a connection, click Apply, and then click OK.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
