Compressed Folders Feature of Windows Me Does Not Support Multi-Volume Zip Files (267410)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q267410

SYMPTOMS

When you try to access a multi-volume compressed file on a 3.5-inch disk that was created by the WinZip compression utility, you may receive the following message:
Please insert the last disk of the Multi-Volume set and click OK to continue.
After this message, you are not able to copy, delete or view the properties of the compressed folder. If the last disk can not be inserted, the only way to exit this prompt is to hold the CTRL+ALT+DEL keys to open Task Manager, click Compressed Folders, and then click End Task. Please note that you may have to click End Task several times before it closes.

If WinZip or any other ZIP creation program is installed, and .zip files are associated with them, this will not occur.

CAUSE

The Compressed Folders feature of Windows Millennium Edition does not support a .zip file that spans multiple volumes.

RESOLUTION

Use File Manager (Fileman.exe) to copy or delete any compressed files or folders from the 3.5-inch disk drive. To use File Manager for this operation, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type Winfile, and then click OK.
  2. When File Manager starts, select the A drive to view contents of the 3.5-inch disk drive.
  3. Right-click the compressed file or folder that you want to delete or copy, and then click Delete, or Copy.

Note that you cannot view the contents of a compressed file or folder by using File Manager.

WORKAROUND

Install the compression utility (WinZip) that you used to create the original multiple-volume compressed file or folder, and then use that utility to delete the compressed file or folder.
