257824 OL2000: Differences Between Outlook and Outlook Express

SYMPTOMS

When you use the horizontal scroll bar in the Folders list, the blue text that denotes the number of unread messages in a folder is not displayed even if you scroll all the way to the right side of the window. This behavior occurs for the Local Folders, Newsgroups, IMAP folders, or Hotmail folders.

For newsgroups or folders with a mixture of long and short names, the number of unread messages may be displayed for groups or folders with short names. However, groups or folders with long names display no number.

When you set the Folders list to a width where the scroll bar is not required, this behavior does not occur.

CAUSE

The software routine that activates the horizontal scroll bar on the Folders list of the Outlook Express screen does not recognize the blue numbers in parenthesis after the folder or newsgroup name.

WORKAROUND

To see the number of unread messages for the longest titled newsgroup or folder, you must expand the pane to the point where the horizontal scroll bar is not needed. To expand the pane:
  1. In Outlook Express, move your pointer over the right vertical bar of the Folders list until your cursor changes to a two-sided arrow (pointing right to left).
  2. Click and hold the left mouse button, and then drag the vertical bar to the right until you see the end of longest titled newsgroup or folder (including the number of unread messages).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
