Programs Menu Items Displayed in Columns Instead of Scrolling List (267337)

SYMPTOMS

After upgrading to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me), you find that the Start menu no longer displays the contents of the Programs menu in a scrolling list. Instead, the contents of the Programs menu are displayed in columns.

CAUSE

When the Scroll Programs menu check box is selected, the Start menu displays the contents of the Programs menu in a scrolling list instead of columns. When you perform an upgrade to Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition, the Scroll Programs option is returned to its default, unselected state.

RESOLUTION

Customize the Start menu to display the contents of the Programs menu in a scrolling list.

To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the Scroll Programs menu check box.

You can add and remove items from the Start menu, or change their order.

Note: Some of the following procedures only work if you enable dragging and dropping. This specifies that you can drag items from one location on the Start menu to another. Also, if this check box is selected, you can right-click items on the Start menu to display shortcut menus.

To Enable Dragging and Dropping

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the Enable dragging and dropping check box.

To Add an Item to the Start Menu

Drag the item's icon to the Start button.

To Remove an Item from the Start Menu

Click Start, right-click the item you want to remove, and then click Delete.

To Reorder the Items on the Start Menu

Click Start, click the item you want to move, and then drag it to the new location.

To Add the Favorites Folder to the Start Menu

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the Display Favorites check box.

To Add the Logoff Command to the Start Menu

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the Display Logoff check box.

To Display the Contents of Subfolders on the Start Menu

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the Expand Control Panel, Expand My Documents, Expand Dial-up Networking, Expand My Pictures, and Expand Printers check boxes.

To Display the Contents of the Programs Menu in a Scrolling List

  1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Taskbar and Start Menu.
  2. Click the Advanced tab, and then select the Scroll Programs menu check box.
