Windows Millennium Edition Setup Stops Responding on Connectix Virtual PC Because of CPU Check (267327)

SYMPTOMS

Windows Millennium Edition (Me) Setup does not proceed when you attempt to install with Connectix Virtual PC emulation on a Macintosh computer.

CAUSE

Windows Me (2499.3) Setup runs a clock-rate test that allows the installation to proceed only if the computer's CPU is fast enough.

The first time the test is executed by the Connectix emulator, a recompilation step is involved. The added overhead of recompilation affects the results of the test enough that the processor may appear to be too slow, and you may see the message that the installation cannot proceed.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, run Windows Me Setup with an /nm switch:

Setup /nm

This switch causes Setup to skip the processor speed check and allows Windows Me to be installed on a Connectix Virtual PC.
