INFO: Mailto: Does Not Use MAPI to Send Mail (267278)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.5 for Windows 2000
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 for Windows 2000 SP 1
- Microsoft Extended Messaging Application Programming Interface (MAPI)
This article was previously published under Q267278 SUMMARY
Mailto: hyperlinks, commonly found on Web pages, do not use MAPI directly to send mail.
MORE INFORMATION
Clicking a mailto: hyperlink simply invokes the default mail client. For example, if Microsoft Outlook Express is your default mail client, clicking on a mailto: hyperlink starts Outlook Express, and presents the user with a new mail form.
Depending on how your default mail client works, it may use MAPI, but the mailto: hyperlink itself has nothing to do with MAPI.
