Delay Enumerating Security Settings in Group Policy Object (267269)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Server
  • Microsoft Windows 2000 Advanced Server

This article was previously published under Q267269

SYMPTOMS

When working with a Group Policy object by using the Group Policy snap-in, you may experience a long delay when trying to open the security settings of that Group Policy object.

In any Group Policy object, the security settings are located under Computer Configuration/Windows Settings.

CAUSE

This delay may occur if there are no DNS forwarders configured on the Windows 2000 DNS server that hosts the zone for your Windows 2000 domain.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
  • Create a root zone (a zone named "." without the quotation marks) on the same DNS server that hosts the zone for your domain. Note: If you need to use your Internet service provider's (ISP) DNS server addresses for name resolution over the Internet, use the following method.
  • If you use an ISP's DNS server for Internet name resolution, create a forwarder on your DNS server that points to the IP address of your ISP's DNS server.
