OFF2000: Error 2928 When You Install Office 2000 with Additional Sources Specified (267248)

SYMPTOMS

When you install Office 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Error 2928: Please contact product support for assistance.
If you click OK, you may receive this error message again.

CAUSE

This error message appears if you have more than 26 sources specified in either a transform (.mst) file or a modified Setup.ini file.

RESOLUTION

To prevent this error message during the installation of Office, modify your transform file or your Setup.ini file, so it does not include more than 26 different sources.

If you install Office from a network server, and if you install features to run from the server or to be installed on first use, the Office programs need access to the server after the installation is finished. The Office programs may also require access to the server if a file is deleted or becomes damaged. The Windows Installer can copy the file automatically from the server.

To ensure that you always have access to an available network server, you can copy the folder tree from the administrative installation point to one or more additional servers and then specify those servers in the Custom Installation Wizard or in the Setup.ini file on your server. If the primary server is unavailable, the Windows Installer attempts to connect to each server in the list, in the order you specify, until it finds an active server. If no server is found, the installer prompts you for the location of a server.

Initially, the server from which you install Office is considered to be the primary server. If the primary server becomes unavailable and the Windows Installer successfully connects to any server in this list, that server becomes the new primary server. The Windows Installer continues to use the new primary server for all network access. If that server becomes unavailable, the installer searches the list again, including the original server, for an available server to use.
