3Com 3C508 ISA Network Adapter Is Not Correctly Recognized After Upgrade to Windows Me (267232)

After you install Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition (Me) on a computer with a 3Com 3C508 Network Adapter, and your computer restarts, you may receive the following error message:
Your network adapter 3Com EtherLink III ISA (3C509/3C509B) in ISA mode (0001) is not working properly. You may need to set it up again. For more information, see the Network Troubleshooter in Windows Help.
CAUSE
This behavior can occur because Windows may improperly detect the 3Com 3C508 network adapter, and Windows Me does not include a driver for this network adapter.
RESOLUTION
To resolve this issue, remove the incorrect driver and install the proper driver from the 3Com driver disk.
To remove the incorrect driver, follow these steps:
- Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
- Double-click System, and then click the Device Manager tab.
- Double-click Network Adapters.
- Right-click the 3Com Etherlink III 3C509 entry, and then click Remove.
To install the correct driver, restart the computer, and then follow these steps:
- When the Add New Hardware Wizard appears, insert the 3Com 3C508 driver disk in the computer's floppy disk drive, and then click Next.
NOTE: The wizard will list the card as 3C509 Etherlink III (3C509/3C509b) in ISA mode.
- Select Search for the best driver for your device, and then click Next.
- On the following screen, click to select the Floppy Drive check box, and then click Next.
- After the search is complete, on the screen that appears, click Use one of the other drivers, and then click View List.
- Click 3C508 ISA Adapter.
- Click Next twice.
You may be prompted to specify the location of a file called TC508.DOS while Windows is installing the driver. If so, type the following path: - You may be prompted to specify the location of a file called TC508.VXD while Windows is installing the driver. If so, type the following path:
- Click OK, and then click Finish. When prompted to restart your computer, click Yes.
