This article was previously published under Q267200

SYMPTOMS

After you upgrade to Windows Millennium Edition (Me), the Setuplog.txt file may contain the following text:
GenInstall() ERROR!:GenInstall Section :E100B.Upgrade: with sub-section :NDIS.AddReg: ErrorCode=402, ErrorCode2=407

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if your computer contains an Intel-based network adapter and you are using the Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) drivers for the network adapter.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

This entry in the Setuplog.txt file does not indicate an actual problem. System performance is not affected.

The entry is known to occur with the following network adapters:
  • 8255x-based PCI Ethernet or Intel Pro 100+ Mgmt
  • Compaq 10/100 Ethernet
  • Intel 82559 Fast Ethernet
This behavior occurs because this file is called E100bnt.sys in Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition and Microsoft Windows 95. In Windows Me, it is called E100bnt5.sys. The file is the core driver for all Intel Network Interface Cards and without it these devices do not function properly.
