SYMPTOMS

When you click to select the Scan system files at startup check box in Symantec Norton AntiVirus 2000, you may receive the following error message:
Norton AntiVirus could not update your AUTOEXEC.BAT file to configure startup scanning.

CAUSE

The Norton AntiVirus 2000 real-mode virus scanner (Navdx.exe) may not work on a "clean" installation of Windows Millennium Edition (Me) or if you upgrade to Windows Me. This occurs because the Autoexec.bat file is not part of the boot sequence in Windows Me. As a result, the call to the real-mode Navdx.exe scanning file that is added to the Autoexec.bat file does not work.

A "clean" installation of Windows refers to installing Windows on a new (empty) hard disk, or to installing Windows in a new folder.
