  • Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition

This article was previously published under Q267028

SYMPTOMS

When you attempt to open a Microsoft system information file (a file with an *.nfo extension), you may receive one or more of the following error messages:
System Information cannot open this Nfo file. It might be corrupted or an unrecognized version.
Helpctr has caused an error in unknown. Helpctr will now close.

CAUSE

When you try to open an *.nfo file, the preceding behavior can occur if you type a path in the Run dialog box to a floppy disk drive, but no floppy disk is in the floppy disk drive.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, insert the floppy disk that contains the *.nfo file into the floppy disk drive.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

When you type a path in the Run dialog box to the floppy disk drive and a floppy disk is not inserted into the floppy disk drive, the first error message is generated. If you insert a floppy disk (that contains the *.nfo file) into a floppy disk drive, and then type a path in the Run dialog box to the floppy disk drive, the *.nfo file is displayed. However, when you click OK to close the System Information dialog box, the second error message is generated.
