This article was previously published under Q266705

SYMPTOMS

When you install Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.01 on Simplified Chinese Windows 98 Second Edition the text in the following lessons may be displayed in Latin text instead of Chinese characters:

Welcome To Windows 98
Discover Windows 98
Windows 98 Overview

CAUSE

This behavior can occur if the Tabular Data Control (TDC) selects a code page that does not contain set character parameters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, perform one of the following methods:
  • Replace the operating system's original Tdc.ocx file, or specify the code page in the HTML document.
  • Convert all the data files to unicode.
  • Change the host .htm files to set the TDC's Character Set parameter.
  • Add additional Asian text to the data files (in a new, unused column).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.
