If you change the sound or audio hardware on a computer that is running Windows 2000, the sound options are reset.

When you insert or remove a computer from a docking station and the hardware configuration changes for the audio component, Windows 2000 resets all sound options to the default sound options. These default options also include mute volume settings, bass and treble options, and so on. This feature is designed to prevent damage to your computer if you connect a non-amplified laptop to a docking station with an amplified sound systems and the volume is set to maximum.
