PAL Camera Not Detected Properly with Microsoft Digital Video (266653)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

This article was previously published under Q266653

SYMPTOMS

When you use the Microsoft Msdv.sys driver with an Open Host Controller Interface (OHCI) compatible adapter, your Phase Alternating Line (PAL) digital video camcorder is not correctly recognized as a PAL device. When this occurs, image reproduction is poor, and images may appear as if they are encrypted.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because the Microsoft driver for digital video uses National Television Standard Committee (NTSC) encoding instead of PAL encoding, and this prevents digital video hardware from working properly.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

PAL is the European video standard, and provides more (an additional 100) lines of horizontal resolution than NTSC. Also, PAL records at 25 frames per second instead of 30 frames per second for NTSC.
