Damaged Skin File Causes Problems in Windows Media Player (266623)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to start Windows Media Player 7 or 7.1, it may not start properly. If it does start properly, you may be unable to switch from full mode to compact mode.

CAUSE

This issue can occur if your current Media Player skin file is damaged.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, restore the default Media Player skin file by using one of the following methods:

Method 1

Press CTRL+1.

Method 2

Right-click in the skin interface, and then click Return to Full Mode.

Windows Media Player restores the default skin if the skin that is currently in use is renamed. This feature is designed to speed up the process of fixing issues that can be caused by damaged skins.

To restore a damaged Windows Media Player skin, use MSConfig.exe to re-extract the correct .wmz file. Note that if it is a third-party skin, you must download the skin again from the originating Web site.
