SYMPTOMS

Microsoft Small Business Server (SBS) 4.5 customers who want to either upgrade or to add Microsoft Windows® 2000 Professional clients to their network must apply a patch or update to maintain fax functionality. Installing the patch or update to the SBS 4.5 server may result in the following error:
Cannot Update SBS Fax Service - Fax Service Is Not Installed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the installation fails to recognize the previous Fax Client software installation. This may occur because the fax software is not installed, however, it is more likely that the client applications folder, ClientApps, was moved and is now referenced incorrectly in the registry.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: If you use Registry Editor incorrectly, you may cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that you can solve problems that result from using Registry Editor incorrectly. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, use the Registry Editor to verify that the installation location of ClientApps matches the value of

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\BackOffice\SBSClients\ParentDirectory

For example, if the Client Applications were installed on C:\ClientApps, then the value of the registry key above should be equal to C:\ClientApps.
