HOW TO: Manually Configure Windows 2000 for Microsoft Network (MSN) Dial-Up Access (266463)

This article contains information on how to create a dial-up connection to The Microsoft Network (MSN) and the Internet. When you create a dial-up connection, you can use Microsoft Internet Explorer or any third-party browser.

Creating the Dial-up Connection

1. Obtain the local MSN phone number(s) using the appropriate method:
   • From a computer with MSN installed, click Properties, and then verify the properties of the dial-up connections (MSN access phone numbers) in the Dial-Up Networking folder.
     Write down this (these) number(s).
   • From a computer on which you have access to the Internet, obtain a number for the corresponding country of residence. To obtain the number, click the Web site: http://memberservices.msn.com, and then under Quick Links click Access Numbers.
2. In Network and Dial Up Connections, run the Make New Connection wizard.
3. Click Dial-Up to the Internet, and then click Next.
4. Click I want to set up my Internet connection manually, and then click Next.
5. Click I connect through a phone Line and a modem, and then click Next.
6. Type the MSN telephone number, and then click Next.
7. Type your user name in the following format:

   MSN/username
   Example = MSN/Larry

8. Type your password.
9. Type a name for the connection, for example MSN or MSN2.
10. Click No when you are prompted to create a mail account.
11. In the Dial-Up Connections folder, right-click your new dial-up icon, for example MSN or MSN2.
12. On the Options tab, select Display progress while connecting and Prompt for name and password options.
13. On the Networking tab, clear the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks option.

NOTE: If you have more than one MSN telephone number, on the General tab, click Alternates, and then add each additional number.

You can also configure the order of preference in which the numbers are dialed, and have each number dialed automatically if a busy signal is reached.

Access the New Dial-up Connection

• Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Network and Dial-Up Connections.NOTE: You may want to create a shortcut to your desktop for easier access.
• Double-click the new dial-up icon, for example MSN or MSN2.

After you are connected, you can start your browser and you should be online. In Control Panel, double-click Internet Properties. On the Connections tab, set the dial-up icon, for example MSN or MSN2, as the default. This automatically opens your browser and dials MSN.
