OL98: Outlook Uses RTF to Send Messages to Recipients from LDAP Directory (266415)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Outlook 98

This article was previously published under Q266415

SYMPTOMS

Outlook may use Rich Text Format (RTF) to send a message to recipients from a Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP) directory.

CAUSE

This problem can occur because when Outlook sends mail, Outlook checks the PR_SEND_RICH_INFO property of the recipient. If this property is True, Outlook uses RTF to send the mail. But when the recipient is from an LDAP directory, the PR_SEND_RICH_INFO property does not exist. In this case, Outlook treats the mail as if the property does exist and the value is True; therefore, Outlook uses RTF to send the message.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that this article describes. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing this specific problem.
