How to install Office 2000 with the Office 2000 SR-1a Select CD (266323)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office 2000 (Setup) Service Release 1 (SR-1)

This article was previously published under Q266323

SUMMARY

The May 2000 Select CD for Office 2000 SR-1a has a layout of files that differs from the earlier Select CDs and a retail CD. This different layout of files may affect the way that you install Office.

The "More Information" section of this article describes several scenarios of the different ways to install Office by using a Select CD with this different layout.

MORE INFORMATION

The files that are used to run Setup using the SR-1a Select CD vary from earlier Select CDs and the retail CD, because there is no single set of core Setup files (Setup.exe, Setup.ini, Data1.msi, and Autorun.inf). Instead, there is a set of these four Setup files for each of the different Office editions and the Office standalone products.

The names of these different Setup files use the following naming convention:

Auto???.inf
Data1???.inf
Setup???.exe
Setup???.ini

where ??? in the preceding file names is replaced with a three-letter abbreviation for each of the different Office editions. For example, the Setup files for Office Premium include the three-letter abbreviation prm.

The following table lists the different .msi, .exe, .ini, and .inf files on the root of the Office 2000 SR-1 Select CD for each of the different Office and standalone editions.
Office Edition .msi .exe .ini .inf
   ------------------------------------------------------------------------
   Premium Data1prm.msi Setupprm.exe Setupprm.ini Autoprm.inf
   Professional Data1pro.msi Setuppro.exe Setuppro.ini Autopro.inf
   Standard Data1std.msi Setupstd.exe Setupstd.ini Autostd.inf
   Access Data1acc.msi Setupacc.exe Setupacc.ini Autoacc.inf
   Excel Data1exl.msi Setupexl.exe Setupexl.ini Autoexl.inf
   FrontPage Data1fpg.msi Setupfpg.exe Setupfpg.ini Autofpg.inf
   Outlook Data1out.msi Setupout.exe Setupout.ini Autoout.inf
   PowerPoint Data1ppt.msi Setupppt.exe Setupppt.ini Autoppt.inf
   Word Data1wrd.msi Setupwrd.exe Setupwrd.ini Autowrd.inf

Depending on whether Office is already installed from a retail CD, an earlier version Select CD, or an administrative installation, you may need to take some additional steps before you run Setup from the SR-1a Select CD or from an SR-1a administrative installation.

The following sections are organized by installation method: administrative installation or CD.

Installing from an SR-1a Administrative Installation

Creating the SR-1a Administrative Installation

If you plan to install SR-1a from a network location, the first step is to create an administrative installation. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Insert the SR-1a Select CD into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following:

    CD-ROM drive\Setupprm.exe /a

where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.

NOTE: The command line that you use will vary, depending on the edition of Office you want to install. Please see the table earlier in this article for the different versions of Setup???.exe that can be used with the Select CD.
  3. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Administrative Mode dialog box, type the appropriate name in the Company box, and then click Next.
  4. In the Microsoft Office 2000 End-User License Agreement dialog box, click I accept the terms in the License Agreement and then click Next.
  5. In the Microsoft Office 2000 dialog box, type the path for your new SR-1a administrative installation, and then click Install Now. NOTE: Do not specify the same folder as your original SR-1 administrative installation.
  6. Click OK when the installation is finished.
  7. Using a text editor like Notepad, open the Setup???.ini file on your administrative installation. For example, if you created an administrative installation of Office Premium, you would open the Setupprm.ini file.
  8. Change the MSI=data1???.msi line in the [MSI] section of the file so that it instead points to data1.msi. For example, if you created an administrative installation of Office Premium, you would change the line:

    MSI=data1Prm.msi

    to:

    MSI=data1.msi

  9. Save and close the Setup???.ini file.
  10. Rename the Data1???.msi file on your administrative installation to Data1.msi. For example, if you created an administrative installation of Office Premium, you would rename the Data1Prm.msi file to Data1.msi.

If Office Is Not Installed on the Network Client

If you do not have Office installed on a network client, use the following steps to install SR-1a from your newly created administrative installation:
  1. Click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following:

    Admin Path\Setupprm.exe /qb

where Admin Path is the path to your administrative installation.

NOTE: The command line that you use will vary, depending on the edition of Office that you want to install. Please see the table earlier in this article for the different versions of Setup???.exe that can be used with the Select CD.
  2. Click Yes if prompted to restart your computer.

If Office Was Originally Installed from an Administrative Installation

If you have a network client where Office was originally installed from an administrative installation, follow these steps to update the client from the SR-1a administrative installation:

  3. Click Yes if prompted again to restart your computer.

Installing from the SR-1a Select CD

If Office Is Not Yet Installed

If Office is not yet installed on your computer, follow these steps to install Office 2000 SR-1a from the Select CD:
  1. Click Start and then click Run. In the Open box, type a command line similar to the following:

    CD-ROM drive\Setupprm.exe

where CD-ROM drive is the drive letter of your CD-ROM drive.

NOTE: The command line that you use will vary, depending on the edition of Office that you want to install. Please see the table earlier in this article for the different versions of Setup???.exe that can be used with the Select CD.
  2. Follow the steps in the different installation dialog boxes.

NOTE: Because you are using a Select CD, you will not be prompted to enter a CD key.
  3. When the installation is finished, click Yes if prompted to restart your computer.

If Office Was Originally Installed by Using a Retail or Select (non SR-1a) CD

If Office is installed and you used a non SR-1a Retail or Select CD to perform the installation, you have two options to upgrade to SR-1a: uninstall Office first, and modify the registry. The recommended option is to uninstall your existing Office installation before installing SR-1a from the Select CD.
  • Uninstall Office First

The recommended method in this scenario is to uninstall Office before installing SR-1a from the Select CD:

    1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
    2. In Control Panel, double-click Add/Remove Programs.
    3. In the Add/Remove Programs Properties dialog box, double-click the Office 2000 item.
    4. In the Microsoft Office 2000 Maintenance Mode dialog box, click Remove Office.
    5. Click Yes to the prompt asking whether you want to confirm the removal of Office.
    6. Click Yes if prompted to restart your computer. The next steps will install SR-1a with the Select CD.

    7. Insert the SR-1a Select CD into your CD-ROM drive.
    8. Click Start, and then click Run.

    9. Follow the steps in the different installation dialog boxes.

NOTE: Because you are using a Select CD, you will not be prompted to enter a CD key.
    10. When the installation is finished, click Yes if prompted to restart your computer.
  • Modify the Registry The second option is to modify the registry so you can install SR-1a on top of your existing Office installation.

Please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base for instructions on how to modify the registry in this scenario:
